I believe that children learn best when the activities are meaningful to them. I encourage growth by building on each child’s strengths. Each child is treated as an individual with specific needs and gifts. My role, as an early childhood educator, is to discover these and provide opportunities for the child to flourish.
I believe that all children are intrinsically good with the ability to learn appropriate behavior. I model appropriate behaviors because I see myself as a role model for children. I set appropriate limits and follow through consistently. I utilize positive guidance techniques, telling children what they can do instead of what they cannot. Children must first feel good about themselves in order to effectively develop new skills and feel successful.
I view my relationship with families as a partnership helping to enhance the lives of our children. Parents are welcomed in our program and encouraged to extend upon ideas at home. Open communication between parents and myself is a vital part of each relationship.
Children need a variety of developmentally appropriate activities that meet each child’s unique social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs. Exploration and creativity is encouraged in everything we do. The focus remains on the process and not the product of each child’s work.
I encourage conversation by asking open-ended questions. I allow children to work through their problems, but am available to assist whenever necessary. I give clear expectations for children while providing them with as many choices as possible. Activities are non-sexist and non-bias, providing opportunities for children to learn about cultures different from their own.
